Spray polyurethane foam (SPF) insulation has grown in popularity in large part because it is so good at keeping homes warm in winter and cool in summer.

Because it is sprayed directly into the gaps, cracks and other surfaces that contribute to heat loss, it both insulates and air seals, offering one of the easiest and most effective ways of weatherizing existing homes and new construction.

Some types of SPF require specialized training and professional installation, but “foam in a can” or “one component foam”, is a product that is available for smaller Do-It-Yourself (DIY) projects around the home.

Insulating foam sealants (a type of SPF product, typically sold in a small 12-24 oz. can), are available at home improvement stores. These products are intended for use in a “bead type” application for air sealing or adhering. Their small volume, ease of use, and portability make them well-suited for small projects, such as sealing gaps and crevices.
